Muslims  Mourn  the  Dead  &  the  Loss  of  Tolerance

Alone  in  stark  sihlouette  against  the  green  of

Islamic  Centre  mosque  seems  to  be  lonely  vigil。

Here  in  America“s  oldest  mosque  in  the  centre  of
 the  capital“s  diplomatic  quarter,  hundreds  of 
people  gathered  for  special  September  11  prayers 
yesterday  morning  -  a  solemn  reminder  that  many 
Muslim  Americans  are  also  in  mourning。

Other  memorial  services  were  receiving  far  more 
attention,  yet  few  could  be  more  important  to  the
 issue  of  US-Muslim  relations。

In  a  service  open  to  other  faiths,  Imam  Abdullah 
M。  Houji  was  expected  to  issue  a  plea  for 
tolerance  and  understanding  -  a  message  he  has 
taken  to  the  White  House  and  Capital  Hill  in  the 
last  year。

To  many  Muslims,  it  will  be  a  message  that  cuts 
both  ways  one  year  on。

"I  am  sure  that  vast  majority  of  ordinary  Muslims
 feel  a  sense  of  immense  outrage  and  sympathy  and 
shame  at  the  attacks,"  said  Muslim  Ibrahim  Kamahl。

"We  were  happy  to  see  the  Washington  mosque 
condemn  the  attacks  within  hours  yet  today  our 
thoughts  cannot  help  be  with  the  future。。。Many 
of  us  are  so  worried  about  the  tone  of  public 
rhetoric  here,  especially  as  another  conflict 
approaches。"

"We  are  not  evil  people  and  Islam  has  never  been 
an  evil  religion  but  this  is  how  we  are  being 
portrayed  by  the  Christian  right。"

Surf  the  television  and  radio  shows  and  it  is 
not  hard  to  get  an  ear  for  such  concerns。 
Franklin  Graham,  the  preacher  son  of  famous 
evangelist  Billy  Graham,  was  one  prominent  figure 
who  recently  described  the  religion  as  "evil"。

Many  Muslims  want  president  George  W。Bush  to 
renew  his  efforts  to  publicly  reach  out  to  the 
faith  as  he  did  in  the  days  immediately  after 
September  11,  visiting  mosques  and  issuing 
statements  describing  the  "great"  religion  as  one 
of  "peace"。  Some  fear,  however,that  he  is 
increasingly  under  the  influence  of  Christian 
Republicans,  particularly  as  a  new  war  looms  over 
Iraq。

Some  fear,  too,  that  more  delicate  issues  could 
be  lost  amid  the  rhetoric,  and  that  Washington 
will  miss  important  opportunites  to  deal  with  the 
Arab  world  and  help  to  moderate  Islamic 
fundamentalism。

Religious  scholar  Karen  Armstrong  this  week  warned 
a  far  more  nuanced  approach  was  needed  by 
Washington  in  dealing  with  only  Islamic  nations 
that  had  the  respect  of  thier  citizens。  A  "new 
climate  of  hatred"  had  to  be  avoided  at  all 
costs  and  Washington  should  try  to  distance  itself 
from  its  own  Christian  fundamentalists。

The  anniversary  has  sparked  wide  debate  across 
America“s  Muslims,  with  some  warning  that  secular 
services  could  be  against  Islamic  teachings。

Others  have  urged  the  fullest  participation, 
sensing  a  tough  year  ahead。

Altaf  Ali,  the  regional  director  of  the  Council 
on  American-Islamic  Relations,  said  there  was  a 
need  to  show  Americans  that  Muslims 
were  "suffering"  too。

"Our  absence  from  involvment,  if  we  do  not  go 
out  and  show  support  in  acts  of  solidarity  and 
establishing  a  day  of  unity  and  prayer,  that  in 
a  sense  can  backfire  and  harm  us,"  he  said。

"There“s  only  benifit  from  getting  involved,"  Mr 
Ali  said。 

一遍读懂这条新闻的水平，大约需要较熟练地掌握一万词汇以上，而且多少有些英语小说散文的基础，特别是开头一段的描述性文字。本文中的一些单词需要直接英英词典，不然不好理解。

我认为，有这样的基础就可以直接阅读国外网上的英语报道。但是要一遍听懂同样水平的新闻广播或电视，还需要经过特别训练。一般说来，可以两遍听明白CNN/NPR/VOA的标准英语报道，就达到了可以直接同老外谈正经事情的程度。

自学英语要达到以上程度，是非常困难的事。一般通过六级的学友，在阅读方面问题不太大。主要是提高阅读速度和改善阅读精度。而要听懂就不容易了。我的工作单位有几位通过六级的同事，但没有一人达到这个水平。当我们必须与老外谈重要公务时，只有请专业翻译出马。也就是说，六级英语还无法实际运用。这是很大的遗憾。

我还注意到一个较普遍的情况，通过六级英语的同事一般说英语的水平高过他们的听力。有不少话能说得出，但往往听不懂老外说的话。由于听力的障碍，影响了交流。

提高实际运用英语的水平，需要注意几点：快速阅读，标准英语听力，流畅的口语，标准英语写作。

解决阅读问题，要熟悉15000以上的词汇，并必须有能力无障碍地查阅英英词典。关于使用英英词典，很多六级英语者并不重视，不少人甚至不会查阅英英词典。我个人的经验是，不会熟练使用英英词典，就难以登上高级英语的平台。提高快速阅读水平，一定要加大阅读量，特别是大量阅读原版材料。 

有关听力，逆向法是自学的好方法。主要因为这种方法特别适于精听，能帮助自学者打下扎实基础。有了基本功再练泛听就容易许多。 

口语问题，需要有良好的发音基础。最好请一专门的老师个别辅导。一对一地矫正语音是最佳途径。花三个月时间足矣，学费也不多。有好的语音和好的听力，是进入高级英语的重要台阶。多去英语角，跟别人胡聊，说对说错不要紧。能一口气说半小时英语，再练习听力就会有不同的感觉。

有了六级英语基础，再结合自己的工作特点学习中高级英语，经过两年努力肯定大有收获。 

今天我想说说“耐心”二字

不急躁，不焦虑是耐心的本质。我在学习听力中犯过两大错误，一是不断要求自己在半年或一年内达到“精通”的程度----结果无一不以破产告终；二是频繁变更学习方法，时而逆向法，时而“千万别学法”，时而“泛听法”，时而以阅读带动听力法等等----最后那种方法都尝试了皮毛，丧失了精髓。

学习英语一定要平心静气。结合个人实际寻找一种合适的方法，然后就要“任凭风浪起，稳坐钓鱼船”。以我的教训为例，刚开始练听力时，选择了逆向法。可是一上手，发现太难。首先是一分钟的标准英语录音，需要40-50分钟才听写完。于是不再听写，改成一边看书一边听。花了几个月，没有多大进步。于是又改成以泛听为主，结果最大的收获是对英语语音熟悉许多，但是照样听不懂。这回，我不得不查找问题到底在哪里，老老实实“大撤退”，回到自己真实的水平上：放弃听标准英语，改听慢速录音。

其实，钟教授在《听遍全世界》中早有提醒，要学习标准英语听力，必须具备一遍听懂慢速英语的基础。而我在起步时，需要三遍才能完全听懂SPECIAL  ENGLISH。现在看，以如此初级的基础，就幻想在半年之内突破听力难关，显然是太幼稚了。

类似的错误后来又多次重复。比如，当我感觉听慢速英语有提高时，又急于攻下《高级听力》教材，并再次把目标锁定在半年过关。结果只是多了一次失望。

在反反复复的摸索中，我逐步认识到提高听力一定要沉住气。默写要沉住气；精听要沉住气；就连泛听也需要沉住气----泛听不可走神，必须紧紧追着录音，尽量获取信息。在缺少英语听说的环境下，没有谁能轻轻松松学会英语。

所以，我说学英语是很累的活儿，特别需要耐力。只有耐心，没有足够的投入，还是学不会。我认为，在起步时期，每天至少要花三到五小时，而且方法要对路。我虽然自称花了3000小时练听力，但由于中间弯路太长，真正有效时间也就1500小时左右。这可是八小时工作制下200天不带工资的白忙活啊！希望兄弟姐妹们千万要把我作为反面教材。

----花三分之二以上的时间精听和听写，用不到三反之一时间泛听一些比较容易的材料。这是我在“回头是岸”时的心得。

----老老实实根据个人实际水平，从低起点开始练习听写，并且认认真真地一个个词写对，不懂就查找词典，向高手请教。这才叫打基础。

----稍有进步时，千万不要忘乎所以，听力要进入“一马平川”的境界还有漫漫征途。

----只有当听写标准英语没有任何恐惧感，而且许多句子不用听写也弄得明白时，才可以减少听写时间，转而精听与泛听合理结合。
