"Ordinary" was the worst word my mother could find for anything. I remember her taking me shopping and taking no notice of the shop assistants when they suggested that some dress or pair of shoes was very popular -"we've sold fifty already this week". That was all she needed to hear. "No", she would say, "we're not interested in that. Haven't you got something a little more unusual?" And then the assistant would bring out all the strange colours no one else would buy. And later she and I would argue because I wanted to be ordinary but my mother wanted to be unusual. "I can't stand that hairdo(发型)."she said, when I went to the hairdresser with my friend and came back with a boy haircut, "It's so terribly ordinary." Not ugly, not unsuitable. But ordinary... "Couldn't you please wear something else?" I asked one day when she was dressing for Parents' Day in tight-fitting bullfighter's pants and a bright pink sweater. "What's wrong with what I'm wearing?" What wasn't wrong with it! "It's just that I wish you'd wear something ordinary," I said , "something that people won't laugh at." She looked at me angrily and then said ,"Are you ashamed of your own mother? If you are, Isadora, I feel sorry for you. I really do."

No one wants to look silly or do the wrong thing at a new job. It is important to make the right impression(印象) from the very first day. You will face new people. You will be in a new place. It may be difficult to know what to do. Here are five tips to help you make it through the firstdays at a new job
1.First impressions can last forever. Make sure you make a good one. Before your first day, find out if your new job has a dress code (rules about what you can wear to work). If so, be sure to follow it. No matter what, always be neat and clean.
2.Get to work on time. Give yourself an extra 15 minutes to make sure you arrive on time.
3.Pay attention to introductions. One of the first things that your supervisor may do is to introduce you to co-workers. These co-workers will be important to you. They are the ones who will answer your questions when the boss is not around.
4.Ask plenty of questions. Make sure that your supervisor has told you what is expected of you. If he
or she has not told you your duties, ask for a list. Set daily and weekly goals for yourself.
5.Never be the first one to leave. Observe what your co-workers do around quitting time (下班时间).
It does not look good for you to be eager to leave.

Do you know that you can use your watch as a compass on a sunny day? Take a
watch and point the hour-hand in the direction of the sun. Imagine a line which runs from
the center of the watch through a point half-way between the hour-hand and number one.
This line will surely point south.
If you know astronomy a little, you will understand why this works. In
the northern half of the earth, the sun is in the south at noon. In our
country the real noon is one o'clock. If at that time we point the hour-hand
at the sun, the hour-hand and number one will point south. That is why you
must imagine a line which will run from the center of the watch through a
point half-way between the hour-hand and number one. It will point south. If you are in the southern
part of our planet, you must point number 12 at the sun. The line which you can imagine between number
twelve and the hour-hand will then show north.
51. When we carry out this experiment in the northern part of the earth,
we should point _____________ at the sun.
A. number 12 B. the minute-hand
C. the hour-hand D. number one
